Bolsonaro and Mandetta
The relationship between President Jair Bolsonaro and Health Minister Luiz Henrique Mandetta continues to present ups and downs. Even after the last week’s “truce” and Bolsonaro’s more moderate national pronouncement on radio and TV, the president this weekend returned to visit local businesses in Brasília (DF), where he went to eat lunch. He was also in Goiás (GO), where he participated in the inauguration of a field hospital. In the state, he again walked among and greeted his supporters. The differences between the two became even clearer on Sunday night, when Luiz Henrique Mandetta stated during an interview on the TV show Fantástico, “Brazilians do not know if they should listen to the minister or the president."
There are two issues at the heart of the relationship between them. The first is the conduct of the Ministry of Health in the coronavirus crisis. While Bolsonaro defends more flexible restrictive measures, called "vertical isolation", so that economic activity is not so handicapped, Mandetta and his team are convinced of the need for horizontal social isolation. The second concerns politics. The popularity that Mandetta has gained in managing the pandemic is creating discomfort for the president.
