Bolsonaro’s speech at the UN prioritizes environmental policy and the pandemic

During his opening speech at the United Nations (UN) General Assembly, President Jair Bolsonaro sought to address two issues for which Brazil is highly criticized in the international community: environmental policy and management of the coronavirus pandemic. It was a defensive speech, stating that there is a plot to worsen Brazil’s image in the world.

The Brazilian government’s environmental management is one of the main reasons for the criticism the country receives from the international community. Since last year, organizations, countries and personalities have challenged Brazil’s policies on the environment. European countries point to deforestation in Brazil as an obstacle to confirmation of the Mercosur-European Union (EU) trade agreement.

Regarding the coronavirus pandemic, the president lamented “every death” caused by COVID-19. He went on to say that he always defended measures to combat the virus and the economic effects of the pandemic.
