Bolsonaro selects new Justice Minister and Federal Police General Director
President Jair Bolsonaro appointed André Mendonça, who until now was the Attorney General of the Union (AGU), as Sergio Moro’s replacement in the Ministry of Justice and Public Security. His appointment is a compromise. Mendonça has good relations with the ministers of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) and also pleases evangelicals, who are important supporters of Bolsonarismo, since he is a pastor of the Presbyterian Church Esperança, in Brasília (DF).
Bolsonaro also selected the head of the Brazilian Intelligence Agency (ABIN), Alexandre Ramagem, as the new director-general of the Federal Police (PF), replacing Maurício Valeixo. The choice of Alexandre Ramagem for the PF General Director, however, generated negative repercussions in public opinion. Ramagem has a close relationship with the Bolsonaro family. In the 2018 presidential campaign, he was the chief of security of then-candidate Jair Bolsonaro, when he became extremely close to the family inner circle.
