The Brazilian government is showing the first signs that it has established a line of communication with the United States regarding the tariffs announced by Trump. Yesterday, Vice President and Minister of Industry and Trade Geraldo Alckmin said he had a long phone conversation with U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick. Next week, the official agenda begins for the Brazilian senators traveling to the United States to try to negotiate an end to the tariff hike. The bipartisan delegation includes members of Lula’s Workers’ Party (PT) as well as opposition senators. Justice Alexandre de Moraes ruled that Bolsonaro committed an “isolated irregularity” by speaking with reporters, which does not warrant a request for pretrial detention. According to Moraes, the former president is allowed to give interviews but cannot use them to circumvent the ban on using his own social media accounts by appearing on third-party platforms.
