Breakaway region of Moldova asks for ''Russian protection''

On February 29 Transnistria made the request, saying it faces and economic war by Moldova. Transnistria unofficially broke away from Moldova in 1991 at the breakup of the USSR. Some Transnistrians have even suggested becoming part of Russia. Some people there are ethnically Russian and everyone there can speak Russian. Moldova said it is not pressurizing Transnistria economically and wants to peacefully reunite the country. In January 2024 Moldova put import and export taxes on goods going to and from Transnistria. There are 1,000 Russian troops in Transnistria—Moscow says they are peacekeepers. Moldova says they are illegal occupiers. Moldova aspires to join the EU and is a candidate member but does not wish to join NATO. However, there is a considerable minority in Moldova that is pro-Moscow. Moldova borders Romania and Ukraine.
