Capitalization of state-owned television: A systemic problem?
During the last couple of months (and probably for what is left of 2017), legislative activity has been drastically reduced, thanks to the ongoing discussion of the budget bill and the election campaign. Nevertheless, at least one new piece of major legislation will be probably adopted – a bill relating to Televisión Nacional de Chile (TVN), the state-owned television network and one of the biggest players in the Chilean TV market. After a string of unprofitable years, by 2015 the company’s financial situation was becoming critical, leading the Bachelet administration to present a bill to tackle the situation. After a long and difficult discussion, particularly in the Senate, the law was approved by the upper chamber and sent back to the House of Deputies, where it is expected to be approved. However, the bill raises some questions about public television in particular, and the competitiveness of Chile’s television industry in general.
