Central Asia military drills take place without Russia

On August 10 Mongolia, Pakistan, the US, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan began their military exercises in Tajikistan. The US is sponsoring it. The exercise is called Regional Cooperation 22. Washington DC has hailed this as an excellent example of its cooperation with the region. The US is keen to promote regional defense identity that excludes Russia. The nations are working on counter-terrorism. Tajikistan is the smallest Central Asian nation that borders Afghanistan which is probably why it was chosen to host the drills. Turkmenistan did not take part. That is in line with its isolationist stance.
