On January 5 ministers from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan signed a deal to build the Kambar-Ata 1 hydropower plant in Kyrgyzstan. Work shall commence in 2024 and completion is projected for 2028. The scheme will be the biggest hydropower plant in Kyrgyzstan and will provide the other two signatories with electricity too. Waterflow had often been a contentious topic in Central Asia. The countries need it not only for hydropower but also for agriculture. Kyrgyzstan has almost no oil and gas but the other two signatories have plenty of oil and gas. With growing populations and economies, the demand for electricity is growing. Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan want to use renewables at home to allow as much oil and gas for export as possible. They are aware that even China, their main customer, will phase out hydrocarbons eventually. Therefore they need to make as much money as they can in the next several decades.
