Chair of Kazakhstan Senate suddenly fired

On May 2 the President of Kazakhstan fired the Chair of the Senate. President Tokayev thanked Dariga Nazarbayeva for her work and offered no explanation for the unheralded announcement. Chair of the Senate is the successor to the president if he dies in office or is incapacitated. Dariga Nazarbayeva is the eldest daughter of former President Nursultan Nazarbayev. Her father is the Chairman of the National Security Committee and holds the official title 'Leader of the Nation' for life. Nursultan Nazarbayev is the power behind the throne. It is said that this major decision is taken by Tokayev without his approval. Many assumed that Ms Nazarbayeva would eventually become president. Why this demarche and why now? A court case revealed in March 2020 that Ms Nazarbayeva's family own hundreds of millions of USD worth of property in London. She won the court case pertaining to the property. But was her wealth considered obscene in view of the severe retrenchment that Kazakhstan is experiencing? The 56 year old has held several other senior posts. Surprisingly, no replacement candidates for her post have yet been nominated. The Chair of the Senate is elected by the senators.
