After the May 1 elections, in which the independent caucus won the most seats (23/70) but not enough to form a majority (36/70), the selection of the National Assembly committees took place, which are crucial in shaping the country’s political agenda. The outcome was a resounding victory for the interests of former President Ricardo Martinelli. On July 22, Deputy Shirley Castañeda, a member of RM and lawyer for former President Martinelli, was elected chairwoman of the Credentials, Rules, Ethics, and Judicial Affairs Committee of the National Assembly. This committee is responsible for approving appointments sent by the executive branch, including key figures such as the Comptroller General and the Attorney General, as well as prosecuting Supreme Court justices. Another political ally of former President Martinelli, Sergio "Chello" Gálvez, a deputy from RM, will chair the Budget Committee of the National Assembly. With this victory, former President Martinelli will have tools to negotiate in line with his interests, particularly a new trial to exonerate him from the guilty verdict that led to his asylum.
