Checkpoint opened on border between Azerbaijan and Armenia

On April 23 the land link between Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh was set up. Nagorno-Karabakh is legally Azerbaijani but has been controlled by Armenia since it took it in a war in the early 1990s. Nagorno-Karabakh is almost exclusively peopled by Armenians. Azerbaijan is supposed to allow Armenian civilians and aid to Nagorno-Karabakh. Azerbaijan cut off the Lachin Road that connects Armenia to Nagorno-Karabakh. Azerbaijan said the checkpoint is to prevent weapons being brought into Nagorno-Karabakh. The 2020 peace agreement between the two nations was midwifed by Russia. Azerbaijan is required to allow Armenia access to Nagorno-Karabakh. Yerevan complains bitterly that Azerbaijan has reneged on this with impunity. Russia is not enforcing it. Azerbaijan has 10 million people, oil, gas and an alliance with Turkey. Therefore, Moscow does not offend Azerbaijan. To do so would irk Turkey, which is the only NATO country not to have sanctioned Russia. Poverty-stricken and landlocked Armenia has only 3 million people and no choice but to be a Russian ally since it cannot afford to buy arms on the open market. France denounced Azerbaijan for breaking the terms of the agreement. France is more sympathetic to Armenia than almost any other country.
