Chile’s first presidential primaries are over. For the first time in Chilean political history, presidential candidates from the two main coalitions were elected in a legally framed primary. In the center-left coalition, “Nueva Mayoria” (New Majority), former Chilean President Michelle Bachelet (Socialist Party) won with a solid 73% of the votes, beating former Finance Minister Andres Velasco (Independent) with 13%, former Peñalolen Mayor Claudio Orrego (Christian Democratic Party) with 8%, and current Senator Jose Antonio Gómez (Radical Party) with 4%.
