China and Russia cooperating on nuclear energy

RUSSIA / FSU POLITICS - In Brief 06 Sep 2022 by Alex Teddy

On September 1 China started building the hulls for four floating nuclear power plants. These will be used to provide energy for an enormous mining project in the Russian Arctic. The mine is in Baimskaya, in Chukotka. There will be other plants, too. The floating nuclear power stations will be operated by Rosatom (the Russian State Atomic Energy company). Russia already has a floating nuclear power plant called the Akademik Lomonosov.  Rosatom said that the hulls are being constructed in China because the tight deadlines makes it impossible to build them in Russia. It is rumored that Wison Heavy Industries is building them. The hull will be 140 m long and 30 m wide. The hull will be towed to Russia, and then two reactors shall be installed. The reactor will be a pressurized water reactor. The Kazakh company Kaz Minerals Group is also involved in the Baimskaya mining project. Copper and gold will be mined. On September 5, China Engineering Co Ltd (CEEC) signed a memorandum of understanding with Rosatom on projects on Sakhalin Island in the Russian Far East.  Collaboration between China and Russia is more extensive and cordial than some Western commentators like to admit.  Chinese President Xi is visiting Kazakhstan next week (September 14) for the first time since the Covid pandemic. Kazakhstan is the largest producer of uranium and a vital part of the supply for Rosatom too.
