China refuses to sell drones to Russia, causing shortage

On September 18 the Russian newspaper Kommersant reported the story. On September 1 China stopped selling UAVs and their components to Russia. China said it is stopping the sale of such items if they might be used militarily but said this was not aimed at any country in particular. Customs data shows Russia spent over USD 100 million on Chinese drones in 2023. Ukraine has also used Chinese drones for war. Agricultural, surveillance and industrial drone retailers in Russia are running out of drones. These drones can be used for military purposes. Those retailers that have them have hiked prices. Some companies bought a lot of stock in August 2023 in anticipation of the ban. But these will run out in 2024. Russian companies can get licenses to buy Chinese drones for non-military uses. But it might take a year to obtain such a license. Drone companies complained that the government did not listen when they warned them that Russia needed to persuade China to issue licenses asap. Kazakhstan is selling Chinese drones to Russia. But Kazakhstan says it is going to tighten up on this due to fear of sanctions.
