China-Russia examined: Xi and Medvedev meet in Beijing

On December 21, former Russian Prime Minister and current Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev met with Xi Jinping in Beijing. This was a surprise visit. Both parties claimed to have discussed matters economic, political and military, including the war in Ukraine. One of the most important statements made at the meeting was by Xi: "The Chinese side is ready for rapprochement with Russia, to constantly promote our bilateral relations in the new era," China’s Central Television quoted him as saying. "China together with Russia intends to facilitate a fairer and more rational implementation of global governance," he said. Chinese collaboration with Russia is evolving from cordiality to a genuine strategic partnership. This marks the continuation of a trend that began in March, when Xi announced a “no limits” strategic partnership with Russia, with Xi leaving China for the first time in 3 years in September - to attend the SCO conference in Samarkand with Russia and other Russian allies such as the EAEU nations and India. Xi met with Putin personally and has described his relationship with the Russian president as being one of close personal friendship. It had been questioned how important Medvedev is. He was president 2008-12 before handing the presidency back to Putin. He is currently the deputy head of the Security Council of Russia. But in the Ukraine War this office has become more important than was previously realized by many outside observers. Therefore sending him to Beijing underscores the importance that Russia attaches to the relationship with the People’s Republic of China.
