China to fund the defense of Tajikistan

On October 30 Dushanbe approved of a new Chinese-funded base on the border with Afghanistan. The government has offered to give full control of the extant Chinese base to Beijing and to make it rent-free in return for being given weapons gratis. That is according to confidential documents as reported by Radio Free Europe.China is extending its military presence Tajikistan. This is partly to secure access to resources, partly to extend control over the Belt and Road, partly to ensure there is always a pro-Chinese regime and partly because China is worried about Afghanistan. If there was ever a war against another country such as India it would be useful for China to have more bases. The Chinese in Murghab, Tajikistan has been there since 2016. Both Beijing and Dushanbe say there is no such base.On October 27 the Tajik Parliament approved the construction of a new base. The base will be in the Gorno Badakhshan Province. The Tajik Rapid Reaction Force wll be based there. China will pay USD 10 million towards this. At the moment the the plan is for no Chinese troops to be based there.China is worried about the Tajikistan assisted Uyghyur militants. The Uyghurs are an indigenous ethnic minority in north-west China. They speak a Turkick language and are Muslims.
