China virus check – week of June 8

Our latest data for economic activity in China shows some pockets of economic growth, but overall flat-to-negative activity:

1) Rising coal consumption in the power industry, but relatively flat operations for iron ore blast furnaces.
2) Traffic congestion is flat to down.
3) Expressway traffic was mixed.
4) Underground metro rail traffic rose modestly.
5) Little change in freight logistics, as previously.
6) Commercial property transactions were down sharply for most of the week.
7) Continued weakness in the job search indices from Baidu.
8) Highway traffic was up sharply, but railway and waterway were uneven.
