Chinese President on state visit to Kazakhstan

RUSSIA / FSU POLITICS - In Brief 03 Jul 2024 by Alex Teddy

On July 2 Xi Jinping landed in Astana for a state visit. The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) is holding a summit in Astana starting on July 3. Xi also in Kazakhstan for that. China dominate the SCO. Russia is also a member of the SCO and Putin shall attend. Other members include India, Pakistan, Iran and three Cental Asian states. Belarus is about to join. Most SCO member states' leaders will attend but the Prime Minister of India will not. China wants there to be an SCO Development Bank and a free trade zone in the SCO. Russia initially resisted this fearing that Chinese sway in Central Asia would mean a diminution of Russian influence. The SCO appears to be mighty because it has 40% of the world's population and 33% of its GDP. It is a counter-pole to US dominated institutions. Pakistan and India's both being in it makes it hard to find consensus as they are enemies. President Xi will fly on to Tajikistan on July 5.
