CHP convention hearing postponed to 24 October

Contrary to majority expectations, the Ankara court trying allegations that CHP Grand Convention, when Ozgur Ozel dethroned Kemal Kilicdaroglu, was rigged, postponed its hearing to 24 October. It is not certain that the bench will reach a verdict, than, either. As I write these lines at 2 PM Istanbul time, Borsa Istanbul was joyously buying the news, as if it meant that CHP and Ozel will be acquitted in the next hearing. Could this be true? It is possible that facing immense pressure from the public, confused by contradictory verdicts by other courts, the Ankara court in question decided appointing Kilicdaroglu was certain career death and decided to buy some more time to find a face-saving solution. More speculatively, the judges may have received different instructions from Erdogan vs Bahceli. Yet, I don’t give much credit to conspiracy theories and certainly don’t believe Erdogan is easing off the pressure on CHP. In my view, today’s decision was another strategic move by Erdogan in response to CHP decision to call another Grand Convention on 22th of September. Pro-opposition pundits and CHP honchos claim once the convention is concluded, all past conventions will be null and void, along with all allegations of fraud and delegate buying. I’ve watched pro-AKP channels where the mood music is completely different: If the Ankara court rules against CHP/Ozel on 24th of October, ALL ACTIONS taken by them will also be invalidated. In other words, CHP’s conventions once the trials have started have no legal standing, because they are decided by members who are convicted of fraud and therefore not eligible to take any such measures.
