Clashes in Istanbul, terror in Izmir

Gursel Tekin pits CHP followers against the police: The sacked CHP Istanbul provincial administration issued a call to members to congregate in front of the headquarters “to defend our ancestral home” against invader Gursel Tekin. Several hundred heeded the call marching towards the building, where to their surprise they saw thousands of police already barricading it. The tense stand-off continued until Monday noon, when the new trustee Gursel Tekin approached the building with his entourage. The police began spraying copious amounts of pepper gas to disperse the crowd and rather brutal tactics to arrest some—as far as I can see from TV Footage. In fact the entire city was put in a near-state of emergency with E-6 main artery blocked, the governorate banning all public gatherings and the Internet watchdog making access to social media platforms impossible without a VPN. Gursel Tekin claimed his throne, but in a rather clever move, CHP administration registered a new address for its headquarters in Zeytinburnu, Bahcelievler. It also notified the Istanbul Election Board that it has enough signatures from delegates for an extraordinary convention to elect new leaders, the tactic used by the Ozgur Ozel in case the party is turned over to a trustee or Kilicdaroglu is reinstated. Today, citizens and CHP MPS gathered once again in front of the former HQ confronting the police as of 13:00 hours. To be continued...
