Costa Rica: Undecided voters upset the election results again
On February 6, 2022, 25 candidates were in the running in the presidential election, while 36 parties ran for Congress. Four years before, those figures were much lower, at 13 and 25, respectively. Surveys have shown high volatility and important differences among them. A second runoff election will be necessary on April 3, since none of the presidential candidates reached the minimum 40% of the vote to be elected.
Former President José María Figueres won this round of the election process, followed by Former Minister of Finance, Rodrigo Chaves of the party Partido Social Democrático.
Abstention was 40%, compared to 34.3% in February 2018. The result reflects the final decision of the undecided voters to move their support to Chaves instead of Lineth Saborío or Fabricio Alvarado. Under these conditions, Figueres and Chaves will take part in the election on April 3. Voters will have to choose between a former president of Liberación Nacional or a former Minister of Finance of the present administration. Regarding economic policy, there are differences between Figueres and Chaves.
