Excitement this week over the rollout of donated Chinese vaccines and arrival of more from Covax has, by the weekend, been doused by reports of rising covid19 infections, with the more transmissible variants of the coronavirus having been detected locally. Yesterday, the health department reported 3045 new covid19 cases, the first time that the daily number exceeded 3000 since October 16. Weekly data we’ve seen show worrying signs of another possible surge in infections with the 7-day average staying above 2000 since February 26, and with the growth rate highest in Metro Manila where the reproduction rate is estimated at over 1.0. We are keeping an eye on bed occupancy rates which, while still manageable, are rising, especially in Central Visayas which is close to 50% and in Metro Manila, which has risen past 40%. A regional occupancy rate above the 70% threshold is expected to lead to tighter quarantine measures and restrictions on movement.
