On October 8 Russian state media reported that a truck crossing the bridge across Kerch Strait exploded. It is the only bridge linking Crimea to Russia. 7 oil tankers on the rail bridge caught fire due to the exploding truck. The bridge to Crimea is vital for supplying the Russian Army. There is no sign of fragmentation on the bridge so it would seem that a missile did not cause the explosion. Ukraine has so far refrained from attacking the bridge. Whether this explosion is sabotage or accidental is unclear. Russia considers Crimea part of its sovereign territory. Putin vowed to defend Russian soil with all means available. As Russia now claims Kherson, Zaporizhzhia, Donetsk, Luhansk perhaps the Ukrainians see no disadvantage in attacking Crimea. The rail bridge has since reopened. One of the road bridges has been partially destroyed. The other road bridge has reopened. There is now one lane in either direction whereas previously there were two.
