On October 29 people in Dagestan burst onto the airport runway in a failed attempt to stop a flight from Israel landing at Makhachkala Airport. The people were protesting against Israel's attacks on Gaza. Dagestan is a Muslim majority republic of Russia. They were angry that Israelis can come to safety whilst Palestinians cannot. Some of the demonstrators waved Palestinian flags and accused the Israelis of killing children. It is alleged that some of them set up unofficial roadblocks to check if any Israeli citizens were there. Online videos appear to show the police firing in the air as people threw stones at them. The police lost control possibly because they were hugely outnumbered. Within 4 hours the police had restored control and the demonstrators had left. Flights were suspended for a few more hours. Organizing mass unrest is a felony that can attract sentences of up to 15 years. The incident is under investigation. Russia is negotiating for the release of 8 Russian-Israelis by Hamas. Despite inviting Hamas to Moscow this has not been achieved. It looks bad for the Kremlin that Hamas has released 2 US-Israelis.
