Cyprus vetoes EU sanctions on Belarus

On September 21 EU leaders on Brussels were unable to impose sanctions on Belarus due to Cypriot objections. Cyprus is the smallest EU member but all EU members have the right to veto sanctions. Belarussian opposition leader Svitlana Tikhanouskaya called for sanctions. Latvia and Lithuania are adamant for them.Why is Cyprus doing this? They will only agree to sanctions, they say, if sanctions are also imposed on Turkey for allegedly trying to steal undersea gas supplies in Cypriot waters. Cyprus has a friendlier relationship with Russia than does any other EU nation. This might also explain the Cypriot attitude. There will be an EU leaders' summit on September 24. That might change things. There is a list of 40 Belarussian officials it wants to sanction for alleged human rights abuses.
