Damage caused by Hurricane Fiona exceeds USD373 m

Preliminary estimates of the damage caused by Hurricane Fiona exceed USD $373 m. (DOP20 b), according to information provided by President Luis Abinader at a press conference held yesterday. The president reported on the efforts made to reestablish services in the affected areas. In the affected areas, it has been possible to restore 91% of the drinking water service, 97.1% of the electrical service in the Eastern region and 99% in the North region, 92% of the access to secondary roads, 100% of health services and 40% of the affected schools. Around 50% of the 9,300 affected homes have been rebuilt. Expenditure on damage repair and reconstruction is being financed with resources from credit contingent on the occurrence of disasters contracted with the Inter-American Development Bank, as well as budgetary resources and internal credit that can be contracted for such purposes. Agriculture is the economic activity with the greatest damage and the government will soon announce assistance measures. Damage to tourism has been very low, and virtually all hotel facilities have returned to normal.
