Deepening relations between Iran and Russia

Russia expressed its deepest condolences on the death of the Iranian President on May 19. Iran is one of the few countries outside the former USSR where Russia has a true friend. The death of President Raisi and his foreign minister is unlikely to result in any diminution in the scale of Iranian trade with Russia. Even Iranian opposition figures tend to favor cordial relations with Russia. Iranian shaheed (''martyr'') drones are important for Russia's war effort. Iran says it only sold drones to Russia prior to the Ukraine War. The US says this is untrue. The United States claims that Iran sells shells, anti-tank weapons, body armor and other items of military hardware to Russia. Russia is also said to have built a factory in Russia in 2023 to manufacture Shaheed drones. It is claimed by the US that Russia is giving Iran SU 35 fighter jets and trainer jets. Iran has allegedly been training Russian troops on different weapons systems. Raisi visited Moscow in 2022 just after he became president. Iran and Russia signed a USD 40 billion deal whereby Gazprom (the Russian state gas supermajor) will invest in Iran's hydrocarbons. Russia is also going to build a railroad from Rasht on the Iranian Caspian Coast to Astara on the border with Azerbaijan. The aim is to have goods transported between Russia and Iran via Azerbaijan. At the moment logistics between Iran and Russia are poor. Work on the Rasht-Astara Railroad has not even begun over 2 years after the deal to build it was signed.
