Deepening relationship between China and Ukraine

In June 2021 Kyiv appended its signature to a statement condemning China for the persecution of the Uyghur ethnic minority. Over 40 nations had signed the statement. The document was to be presented to the UN Human Rights Commission at Geneva and demanded an investigation into the detention without trial or charge of over a million ethnic minority people in Xinjiang. On June 22 the Ukrainian Government then removed its signature from the document. That is because China said if the Ukrainians did not do so, then China would not supply vaccines and would reduce trade.Various Ukrainian officials and Western diplomats spoke off the record to explain Beijing's arm twisting. A politician from the Holos Party has spoken out about what he believes was Ukraine's shameful abandonment of human rights. Ukraine is benefitting from Sinovac vaccines. Over half a million were received shortly after Ukraine revoked its support for the statement about Xinjiang. Ukraine refuses to purchase Russian vaccines. The country has received vaccines for free from the EU and the USA. Ukraine is the poorest country in Europe and could afford very few vaccines otherwise.People from the ruling Servant of the People Party have expressed ignorance of any Chinese pressure to mute rhetoric about human rights in China.Beijing said there are no strings attached to exporting vaccines. But the vaccines were delayed after Ukraine signed that statement, which Beijing found disobliging. As they say: there are no coincidences in China.
