Deux Ex Machina for Nation Alliance, Final Battle for Erdogan

It has been a very eventful day for Turkey, the nomination of Kemal Kilicdaroglu as the joint presidential candidate of the reunited Nation Alliance (NA) being only one. Earlier in the day, Saudi Arabia deposited $5 bn with CBRT, somewhat reducing the likelihood of a currency shock before the elections. Just before NA throned Kilicdaroglu as its candidate, President Erdogan officially called for dual elections on 14 May, the countdown for which shall start on 10 March, when he shall abolish the Grand Assembly. I leave the question of why Meral Aksener first abandoned and then chose to reunite with NA to political forensics experts, except to say that the face-saving solution was ingenious. Her favored candidates, CHP mayors Yavas and Imamoglu shall be appointed as VPs if Kilicdaroglu win the presidency. Along with its nominee, the NA also unveiled a road map to governance. Leaders of all member parties shall also become VPs, while at least one Cabinet minister will be allocated in the same manner. The rest of the Cabinet will be chosen according to the ratio of votes the parties receive in general elections. The road map also sketches out a power-sharing mechanism between the presidency and constituent parties, where major decisions such as renewal of elections, declaration of State of Emergency and appointments to top civil service posts will be taken in consultation. Immediately after Kilicdaroglu’s nomination, pro-Kurdish Rights Party HDP declared that it may not field a presidential candidate if Kilicdaroglu pays it an official visit, which strengthens my conviction that Kilicdaroglu has better-than-even odds to beat Erdogan in the run-off.
