Devilish tricks: Yanukovitch ‘buys’ opposition with posts at the Cabinet

Viktor Yanukovitch proposed for opposition leaders posts at the Cabinet. Arseniy Yatsenyuk was suggested to become prime-minister and Vitaliy Klitchko – vice-prime minister. From the first glance the step might look like a search for compromise with the protesters. Indeed dismissal of the Cabinet was among requests of protesters from the beginning. However, as usual the devil is in details. According to current system, president appoints not only prime- minister but also all ministers and deputy ministers. In other words, the one who is in the chair of prime-minister does not control all other members of his Cabinet. Thus suggesting Arseniy Yatsenyuk to become prime-minister Yanukovitch loses nothing: his ‘family members’ will keep control over law enforcement bodies and budget funds while total responsibility for all economic and other problems will be on opposition leaders. Against this backdrop there is no surprise opposition rejected the proposal.
