Disobedience probe: alarming ring of big reshuffle

Yesterday we witnessed events, which might be the first signal of big shift in Ukrainian politics. Mayor of Cherkasy, a town in central Ukraine with near 280 thnd inhabitants, eased quarantine restrictions from May 1st ahead of any orders from Kyiv. President Zelenskiy in his regular video-address sent ‘fiery greetings’ to the mayor of Cherkasy, Anatoliy Bondarenko, while Minister of Interior Arsen Avakov announced criminal prosecution against Mr. Bondarenko. Mayor of Cherkasy responded publicly that unequal conditions of the quarantine restrictions was the trigger for his decision and emphasized that times when law-abiding citizens were afraid of police have passed. Put it differently, Bondarenko publicly sent the president and top-cop to the devil and refused to obey. The response of Bondarenko met a storm of applauds from observers and opinion makers who immediately supported his position. Scandals with arbitrary application of quarantine rules preceded the disobey in Cherkasy. The loudest was about a hypermarket, selling construction goods, which never stopped operating disregard tough quarantine restrictions. Crowds of customers have been spotted at the hypermarket without any distancing. An influential MP is the owner of the hypermarket which is the main reason why police stayed blind on this case. A restaurant of another MP also was detected hosting visitors while thousands of businesses remaining shut already for more than a month. This stance of affairs when some businesses, close to the power, keep operating as usual while the others have to comply with the rules triggered a storm of indignation.
