Dispute over the direction of the economy

The announcement of the Pró-Brasil program – public investment measures to increase job creation and economic growth with a focus on infrastructure – evinced a dispute in the Jair Bolsonaro government over the direction of the economy in the post-pandemic period. Practically at the same time that the Pró-Brasil program was announced, the Special Secretary for Privatization of the Ministry of Economy, Salim Mattar, when giving a presentation on changes in the privatization calendar, stated that measures such as “a new Marshall Plan” would be “unfeasible” in Brazil due to the state’s inability to carry out such expenditures.

The Pró-Brasil program has as protagonists ministers of the so-called military wing such as Braga Netto (Chief of Staff), Tarcísio Freitas (Infrastructure) and Luiz Eduardo Ramos (Government Secretariat). However, the absence of the Minister of Economy, Paulo Guedes, during the launch of the program, which took place yesterday, signals that the economic team disagrees on the content of the announced proposals.
