Duque makes the right decision in appointing Carrasquilla as Minister of Finance

President-elect Iván Duque has just announced that Alberto Carrasquilla is officially his pick for Minister of Finance. Carrasquilla, a 59-year old economist with ample experience in the Central Bank and Minister of Finance between 2003 and 2007 during the Uribe administration is, without a doubt, the best name for the job among the list of possible candidates considered.During the next four years, fiscal consolidation must continue, reforms have to be implemented and investment grade status has to be kept in place, which is why a person with an established trajectory in the eyes of investors and experience in handling Congress was a must. Without a doubt, Mr. Carrasquilla meets all the requirements.As member and president of the Board of the Central Bank, Carrasquilla will play a crucial role. We expect his stance on monetary policy to be mostly orthodox but pragmatic.
