Electoral board calls for new municipal elections

This afternoon, the Central Electoral Board formally convened new municipal elections for Sunday, March 15. The board indicated that they will be held exclusively with paper ballots. This helps to de-escalate tensions and the electoral crisis. The main political actors are clearly interested in the elections being held. However, apparently the board made the decision unilaterally, without consulting the political parties. The decision is within its powers, but it would have been desirable to take it with the support of the parties. Despite that, it is likely that the parties will support the call. Addressing the nation this evening, President Medina called for prudence and for the preservation of democracy and the rule of law. He also reiterated his commitment with democratic institutions and called the electoral board to step up to the extraordinary circumstances and fulfill its duties. The address also contributes to avert the crisis.
