EU and American sanctions on Belarus

On October 2 the US and the EU imposed sanctions on top Belarusian officials. Lukashenka is not among those sanctioned. His exclusion is an attempt to encourage dialogue with the opposition. If this fails his name can be added to the list. EU sanctions require unanimity. Cyprus was the one hold out for 6 weeks. The Cypriots initially demanded sanctions on Turkey in return for agreeing to sanctions on Belarus. Cyprus has agreed to drop the Turkish issue. Belarus has riposted by issuing a list of people who are forbidden to enter the country. All Western journalists have had their accreditation withdrawn. The EU has vowed to financially support ''democratic Belarus'' i.e. the opposition. It has not worked out how.The sanctions are against top Belarusian securocrats. The Interior Minister and the head of the Election Commission are on the list. The US has sanctioned some of the same people. Russia is vociferously denouncing what is being done to Belarus.
