EU imposes sanctions on Belarus amid tensions with Ukraine

On June 29 the EU said it was restricting trade with this Russian ally. The EU says that Belarus has bought dual-use items from the EU to re-sell to Russia even when this is specifically forbidden by the sale contract. The European Union is now preventing that. The items are navigation equipment, luxury goods and oil refining technology. The new sanctions will also prevent the transshipment of such items via Belarus to countries other than Russia. The new sanctions also ban EU entities from purchasing gold and diamonds from Belarus. The sanctions mirror ones imposed on Russia. Belarus has moved more air defense to the Ukrainian Border. Minsk said that Ukraine threatens its infrastructure. Ukraine has troops deployed along the border with Belarus but Ukraine said that is because its northern neighbor hosts Russian troops. Minsk accused Ukraine of flying a drone over Belarus to spy on Russian Forces. The drone was shot down.
