EU imposes sanctions on Belarus

On August 14 the EU announced 'smart' sanctions on Belarus. The sanctions will target Lukashenka, some organizations and some top officials. The list has not yet been drawn up. This is to penalize the government for their large scale electoral fraud. All EU members agreed to the sanctions in principle. Svytlana Tsikhanouskaya was the runner up in the election. She has fled to Lithuania and has called for mass street protests. Last week she was in Minsk and told people not to protest. It is speculated that she was only allowed to leave the country on condition that she made that statement. Lithuania has offered to mediate between Lukashenka and the opposition. Many Belarussians go to neighboring Poland. Poland will spend USD 13 million helping Belarussians resettle. The EU has asked for the election to be rerun. Moscow condemned the EU for interference. The EU's movie is music to Moscow's ears. By shunning Lukashenka the EU will force him to turn to Russia. Lukashenka will be inclined to make concessions to Russia in return for support.
