EU opens membership talks with Ukraine

On December 14, to the surprise of some, the European Council decided that the process will begin for Ukraine and Moldova. Many had anticipated that Hungary would veto this. Perhaps the EU made the decision to buoy up Ukrainian morale as Western aid is diminishing. Zelensky hailed the news as a victory. Georgia has been given candidate status. This is bad news for Moscow. All three countries are former Soviet republics, and Russia considered them within her sphere of influence. Other former Soviet republics have been in the European Union since 2004: Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia. Ukraine will need to meet the Copenhagen Criteria. Ukraine will need to prove that it has a proper market economy and well-functioning institutions, as well as rule of law. Only then can it move to the final stage of negotiations: the 35 chapters of the Acquis. If that is achieved then Ukraine's membership will have to be approved by all 27 member states and the European Parliament. There are deep concerns about endemic corruption in Ukraine. Rich men are able to bribe their way out of military service. It is very unlikely that Ukraine will be a member of the EU within 5 years.
