EU sanctions on Lukashenka

On November 5 the EU imposed sanctions on the President of Belarus and his eldest son Viktar as well as 13 senior officials in Belarus. Viktat Lukashenka is the national security adviser. The reason given was for violence and electoral fraud. The people on the list have had their assets frozen and are not allowed into the EU. Canada imposed the same sanctions on the 15 people. The 15 include the head of the KGB and the chair of the constitutional court. 49 other Belarussian officials were already sanctioned in October. The EU held off sanctions on the president and his inner circle at first. They hoped to induce Lukashenka to negotiate. That was proven a forlorn hope so the EU changed tack.The OSCE wants fresh elections, the release of what it terms political prisoners and an international investigation into allegations of torture. The EU is particularly exercised by the arrest of 320 journalists.
