EU stops funding Georgia

On July 9 the European Union announced it had frozen Georgia's accession process. This is in response to the Foreign Agent Law. Georgia was rejected for EU candidate membership status in 2022. Nevertheless, Georgia was planning to apply again. Georgia was due to receive EUR 30 million for defense but this has been frozen. The EU has been donating over EUR 120 million to Georgia annually in recent years. This is not an inconsiderable sum for a country of 5 million people with a budget of EUR 50 billion. The EU has publicly stated that it may take more measures if it thinks that the situation in Georgia is worsening further. There will be a parliamentary election in October 2024. It is possible that politicians will be elected who may repeal the Foreign Agents Act. If Georgia is ever accepted into the EU it will not be for decades. Turkey has been a candidate since 1987.
