European Commission recommends Ukraine and Moldova for EU membership

On November 8 the President of the European Commission said that the two countries should be admitted to the EU. Ursula von der Leyen noted that both had made tangible progress towards meeting the EU's requirements in only a few months. The Commission suggested introducing a negotiating framework for the countries to be admitted to the EU. Von der Leyen said that the EU will be stronger and more prosperous with these two new members. For a new state to join the EU all the extant 27 member states need to approve. If the countries are ever to be admitted to the EU it will not be for at least several years. Some EU countries such as Slovakia and Hungary are deeply skeptical about admitting these new countries. Some EU candidateĀ countries have been waiting for admission for over 10 years.
