On July 10 NATO announced that it had commenced the transfer of fighter jets. Ukrainian pilots have been training on them for a year. F16s will be a major boost to the Ukrainian Air Force. On July 5 Russia claimed to have destroyed several Ukrainian jets on the ground. NATO released a strongly worded statement condemning China for industrial support for the Russian war effort. The NATO Summit in Washington DC is to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the organization. It was overshadowed by worries about Biden's mental state and whether he is capable of serving another 4 years a president. NATO is preparing for a second Trump presidency as a very serious prospect. Trump has publicly doubted NATO's efficacy and said he will end the Ukraine War in 24 hours. He says China is a threat to the US but Russia is not. Biden reaffirmed the US commitment to defend every inch of NATO soil. Moreover, the US has announced more air defense for Ukraine. Ukraine has only 2 Patriot air defense systems. 4 more have been pledged by the US and other NATO countries. However, it is estimated Ukraine needs 12 to cover its whole territory. The US is also stationing cruise missiles in Germany. Barack Obama withdrew them from Germany in 2009 in an attempt to reset relations with Russia. Zelensky attended the NATO Summit as did Keir Starmer, the new British Prime Minister. Starmer has authorized Ukraine to use British-supplied missiles as far inside Russia as the range allows. The US also invited Pacific countries that are not members of NATO: South Korea, Japan, Australia and New Zealand.
