Facebook fined for not sharing data with Russian Government

On November 26 Facebook paid a USD 53,000 fine because it was not obeying a data localization rule. The fine is worth 90 seconds of profit. Facebook is booming in Russia. The 2016 law obliges all foreign tech companies to store data on Russian residents on servers in Russia. The Kremlin's critics say that this is so the government can use the data to clamp down on online dissent.LinkedIn was blocked for persistently flouting the law.Facebook was fined in February 2020. Further proceedings against the social network giant have been shelved. Twitter was also fined in 2018 for a similar breach.Companies are obliged to provide encryption data to the Russian internal intelligence service the FSB. Mobile phone companies must keep records of calls and texts.Apple and Google act in accordance with the data localization law.
