Federal intervention in Rio de Janeiro

Following reports of escalating violence in Rio de Janeiro, President Michel Temer has decided to decree federal intervention in the public security of the state. President Temer will sign the Intervention Decree in the Public Security of the State of Rio de Janeiro today, February 16, during a ceremony that will be held at the Planalto Palace. The event will include Rio de Janeiro Governor Luiz Fernando Pezão, Lower House President Rodrigo Maia, Senate President Eunício Oliveira, and other cabinet ministers and authorities. In addition, President Temer will address the nation at 8:30 pm on radio and TV to explain the intervention. The decision has several important consequences.
