Fidesz has left the EPP's parliamentary faction this morning

In a letter sent to Manfred Weber, chairman of the European People's Party faction in the European Parliament, PM Orbán wrote that Fidesz representatives are leaving the EPP faction immediately. This followed a vote in the EPP faction earlier today, in which an overwhelming majority of EPP representatives approved an amendment of the faction's rulebook, allowing the expulsion of all MEPs of any member party with a two-third majority vote.Fidesz's membership in the EPP has been suspended for the last two years, so that Mr. Orbán's party is not invited to EPP conventions and is excluded from the party family's internal votes, discussions and conferences. However, so far Fidesz' elected representatives has remained part of the EPP parliamentary faction, meaning continued normal cooperation and even nominations of Fidesz MEPs by the EPP into various committees and the European Parliament's presidency.Over the past two years, there have been several attempts by an increasingly strong group of EPP member parties to expel Fidesz from the party family, but these all failed because of resistance by a few core parties within the EPP, mainly the German CDU-CSU alliance. However, it appears that this time around Fidesz' internal opposition has found an efficient way to get rid of Hungary's governing party. Following the EPP faction presidency approved a proposal to amend its rulebook last Friday, PM Orbán warned that the amendment was unacceptable for Fidesz and so his party would leave the faction if the proposal is also approved in a vote by all EPP representatives.
