Fighting at air base outside Kyiv

On February 24 Russian troops arrived at the Antonov Air Base by helicopter, the Ukrainian Army said. Kyiv is 110km from the Belarusian Border. It is worrying for Ukraine that Russian troops have penetrated so deeply so fast. Some pundits predict that Kyiv will fall in 48 hours. There are others who say it can hold out for weeks. It is assumed that Russia will bypass cities and fight in the open until it is sure the city is undefended. There are Russian fighter jets over Kyiv.The Russians have taken Chernobyl. This is the site of a 1986 nuclear disaster. The old reactor is covered by a special roof to keep radioactive waste inside. If this roof is destroyed it will have a devastating effect on several countries in the region including Russia.Both sides say they have killed at least 50 enemy soldiers. Some Ukranians have fled to Moldova already. Moldova has closed its airspace. The EU fears that millions of Ukrainian refugees will flee to Poland, Slovakia and Hungary. The EU is considering removing Russia from the visa facilitation scheme.The UK has announced it is freezing the assets of all Russian banks including VTB. Russia and its banks will be banned from raising finance in the UK. 100 individuals and entities will be put on an asset freeze list. Aeroflot will be banned from the UK airports but not airspace.
