Finland expels 9 Russian diplomats

On June 7 Finland said that the diplomats were working in an intelligence capacity. Finland said this was a breach of the Vienna Convention. The Finnish Intelligence Service assessed the diplomats to be undercover intelligence officers and said the expulsions would seriously impair Russian intelligence operations. Finland joined NATO in 2023. It has the longest border with Russia of any NATO country. Finland was part of the Russian Empire from 1813 to 1918. Russo-Finnish relations are their worst since the Second World War. Russia froze the bank accounts of the Finnish Embassy in May 2023. Finland is building a 200-km fence on its frontier with Russia. The border is 1,300 km long. Finland considers some of the border areas to be so remote, boggy, and thickly forested as to be almost impassable. However, Finland is worried that Russia might send illegal immigrants into Finland, which is why the fence is being built.
