Finland joins NATO and Russia threatens a response

On April 4 Moscow said that Finland's accession will cause a buildup of Russian forces on the Finnish border. Putin's spokesman said that there would be countermeasures because what has happened is escalatory. Russia warned NATO not to place attack weapons in Finland. Finland has a 1,300 km border with Russia. Russia did not have to guard this heavily since Finland had promised to be neutral pursuant to a 1944 peace treaty. Russia's pre-existing NATO neighbors are Norway, Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia. Finland suddenly changed its mind on applying to NATO because of the Ukraine War. As some Russians speak about rebuilding the Russian Empire this alarmed Finland, which was part of the Russian Empire for a century. The Finnish military has a very potent artillery. It is a very high-tech nation. Finland's position on the Gulf of Finland makes St Petersburg's access to the sea more perilous.  The Secretary-General of NATO said that Putin had made war on Ukraine to prevent another neighbor of Russia joining NATO but instead Russia has caused one of its neighbors to join NATO.
