Finland to build fence on the Russian border

On November 18 Finland said the 200 km fence will enhance its security. Finland has been neutral since 1944. In March 2022 it ended this policy because it said there was a threat from Russia and applied to join NATO. That is a breach of its 1944 peace treaty with the USSR. The 3-meter fence will have barbed wire and loudspeakers to warn off people coming near it. A pilot fence has already been built. It will not cover the whole border. There are many lakes along the border, making invasion even harder. The Finns are also afraid that Russia could send illegal immigrants to Finland. Belarus tried this with its neighbors in 2021. Latvia, Lithuania and Poland are also building border fences.  Finland was part of the Russian Empire from 1814 to 1917. The Finns fear that Putin might try to annex them.
