First case of COVID-19 in the country

Authorities of the Ministry of Public Health just announced the first COVID-19 case in the country: a 62 years old male Italian tourist who flew-in from Italy on February 22. The tourist, who arrived in the country without symptoms, is already in confinement in a military hospital and is doing well so far. Weeks ago, the Ministry of Health set up a commission and prepared a protocol to deal with the COVID-19 threat. In this case, the protocol is being followed, the Minister said. At this moment, following the protocol, other passengers that arrived in the same flight as well as those that could have been in contact with the patient in the beach hotel where he was staying are been traced. Although the epidemic is likely to cause damage to tourism in the Dominican Republic, as global demand for travel declines, the news of the case of COVID-19 in country will likely have strong negative direct effect in arrivals of foreign tourists in the hotel sector and related activities.
